Foley Moley

For this third term of school, we've been doing a lot of recording. Everything from Portable recording to Foley to Production recording. I have generally enjoyed the experiences, but think I like Foley the most. Apparently there are a lot of women Foley artists, so this is encouraging (although Foley people might work third shift type hours to keep out noises like traffic...ha! that is NOT my thing!)

Anyone not sure what Foley is, it's the art of re-recording sounds in sync to picture...generally those sounds caused or directly affected by people. The clothes people wear, the footsteps they make, or the props they touch. Any time you see a movie and hear footsteps, they likely aren't the actor's footsteps, but someone who imitated the walk while watching the actor do it...and often adding "character" to it by being forceful if it's a lead or whatever. And while Women are strong in this area, it's also equally true that a big guy could be wearing heels to simulate a woman's walk! And all those big screen "romantic" kisses? most of them are done by kissing your own elbow or something. And yes, it could be a big hairy guy kissing his elbow to get that kiss that makes everyone say "awww...". While I'm at it, there is no Tooth Fairy, and Tinkerbell uses a wire to "fly" at Disney parks. Doesn't make any of it less magical for me though.

Oh yes, and Foley is named after a guy (forget his first name, possibly Jack) who decided to record stuff in sync with picture first...some time around when all those John Wayne movies were being made I think.

Enjoy the fun pictures of us doing some recording in the Foley rooms! Oh, and one of the reasons I really enjoy Foley? I used to watch movie credits (Still do) and say "hey, Foley artist sounds fun. I could do that!"...and now I am!!!

Pictures - The Guys...Steve is eating a sandwich (and it sounds really gross over the mics)...also walking with pant legs pulled up, Billy is wearing the boots, Andres is at the computer, and Jason is creating cloth sounds with a suit jacket.

Looks fun, but next time you make an entry on this subject the title should be "Axel Foley" or something similar.
