Yes, yes I realize "orflinage" isn't technically a word, but "truthiness" wasn't either and Stephen Colbert made it work. And yes, I happen to think it is irrelevant that he has a hit tv show and book while I only have a small scale blog. Are you saying I can't be as creative with my vocabulary? Anyway, it's a cutesy-ism (stop criticizing my potential and check out www.wordspy.com for loads of fun new vernacular) that my friend came up with when discussing the loveable furry pets waiting for adoption at the Washington Animal Rescue League (aka WARL)! Why do I bring up WARL? Because today was my first day there as a receptionist (part time) and I couldn't be happier about it. I mean, who doesn't want to find homes for the orflins? Awww...does anybody need a pet with built in love to give? I know where to find one of the furry four-legged variety!
My basic point is, check out their site (www.warl.org)...it's an amazing shelter in Washington D.C. and is being used as the model for many other shelters around the country due to its design for a calm animal environment conducive to successful adoptions. (people can bring their pets to their offices when they work here too!) Sure, I've just started, but I've loved animals my whole life, and been an advocate for shelter adoptions for as long as I can remember (my girls, Athena and Aja came from the shelter system). For the first time, I think I truly feel like I'm doing a job that is "giving back". I'm still searching for a full time job in my "field of study", but I hope I can keep this job with it just because it's such a happy place when an animal is picked up to go to its new home. =)
And if you need another reminder of the amazing thing that is pet adoption, check out the Mutts comic strip (it's creator supports WARL and many of his strips adorn the shelter's walls) online at http://muttscomics.com/ . While you're at it, if you really want your heart to melt, pick up a copy of the new Mutts book, "Shelter Stories: Love Guaranteed" and read some actual pet adoption stories. I need to pick up a copy. Aja made it onto the online version of true life shelter stories...I don't know if she made it into the book. (Athena was technically from a foster home, so she couldn't be entered into a book about shelters).
That's my plug for today for pets and all the warm fuzzies they bring. I love all of the orflins at the shelter, but if you want to meet my current favorites, go to the WARL site and look up "Chessie" and "Ivy". Awwww!

You are completely entitled to make up your own vocabulary ... especially on your own blog, and for a good cause - the orflins!! :) Congrats on the job with many a smiles and love and hugs and slurps attached! I do think, however, it's rude of you to not include the link to Aja's shelter story since you mentioned it. Your readers want to see!!!
