Zoom, Zoom, Zoom!

So, these Canadians...they have their holidays all mixed up. Today, it turns out, is Christmas in October! And I have to say, it's better than Thanksgiving in October (though maybe not my cantaloupe-killing version of thanksgiving). Allow me to explain...

My Sound Design program is supposed to include something called ProTools Certification, which is supposed to be an industry requirement. Apparently, in the last several years, certification has not been a big deal to the "industry", and the company that makes ProTools has gotten a bit..um...crazy with it's online tests. (let's just say they don't seem relevant to the coursework. Our class took the 101 test in term 1, and we cheated using the book you are supposed to study for the test, and still only one person in our class passed!) As the certification has gotten trivialized in the industry, and the tests have become more like marketing tools than skills test, the school here has decided to forego this part of the course. However, since people came to the school for that reason, we can still get certified on our own time using school book resources and online test.

BUT the really good news is, the money they are saving from buying sets of books, they are using to buy us all Zooms!! What's a Zoom? Click here (http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h4/) to check it out. Basically it's a portable recording device that's really handy for capturing sounds...and it's worth around $300 or so. We normally have to check them out from the school and return them daily. This will be really nice for the rest of the school year, and for...you know, my ongoing audio career. Anyway, hooray for Christmas in October!
